Thomas D. Saunders was born Dec. 21, 1907 in Kansas City, MO the son of Eli D. Saunders and Annie Attwood Saunders. Tom had two sisters, Anna Laura Smith, who preceded him in death and Ruth Torok and her husband, Paul, of Highland, Kansas.

Thomas married Helen D. Saunders on Nov. 22,1928, she preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 1992.

He is survived by one son, Tom Saunders II and daughter-in-law, Shirley Saunders, both of Conway, MO, four granddaughters; Susan D. Jackson of Springfield, MO, Sharon D. Saunders of Davenport, Iowa; Tomi Lynn Saunders of Springfield, MO and Trisha Lane Kugle of League City, Texas; two great-grandsons; John W. Jackson and Christopher Gavin Jackson, both of Springfield, MO, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

During Mr. Saunders' lifetime, he was associated with many well known business personalities and was Secretary of the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce for several years, and also served on the Lebanon City Council. Later he became Acting Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, (now MOCA), a position he held until he retired in 1975.

In recent years, after retiring, he unselfishly helped his son at Tom's Bait and Tackle Shop in Lebanon, where he daily greeted customers and helped them enjoy their visit to the shop. He had a friendly smile for everyone and for many years he enjoyed making cookies, cakes and candy which he delivered and gave to the special people he liked. Some often called him The Candyman."

He was a man who loved his God, his Savior and his family. The scriptures of the Bible were his favorite reading and he was well aware of his mortality.

Thomas was an outstanding father and he will be sorely missed. He passed away at 10:45 a.m. in Cox South Hospital, Springfield, MO as a result of a heart attack. He was buried at White Oak Pond Cemetery, south of Lebanon, beside his wife Helen. Thomas and Helen were married for 64 years. Thomas loved people and most people loved him, we can never replace him, but we can continue to love, respect and remember him for what he was..A GOOD MAN! May God rest his soul!
