Sunday afternoon Feb 2nd, the Highland community was saddened by the death of another of its outstanding citizens. Comparatively few knew of the serious condition of Sister Saunders until a few days before her death. She died in the SBA Hospital in Topeka. The funeral services were held in the Highland Christian Church where she held her membership all the days of her Christian life. Her pastor, Brother Chas J. Dohn, assisted by former pastor, Brother Lomax, now pastor in Hiawatha, conducted the services. Annie Armstrong Saunders was born Sept. 13th, 1876 near Highland, Kansas. She was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Laura Jane Armstrong, being one of six children, three of whom survive, Jessie Armstrong, Edna ? and J.V. Armstrong, all of Highland, Kansas. Of the family preceding her in death are her parents, and her sister Bettie and brother Charles. Sister Saunders confessed Christ and was baptized in the local Christian Church when in her early teens. From her confession she was an active Christian. She was a woman of deep convictions, uncompromising in her standards of morals, unwavering in her loyalty to Christ and the church, and rich in her personal piety. She served on the councils of the church for many years. She was happily married to Eli D.(Durham) Saunders on April 1, 1901. To this union , three children were born: Annie Laura Smith, Thomas D. Saunders, and Mrs. Ruth Armstrong Torok of Memphis, TN. There are two grandchildren, Laura Jayne Smith and Thomas D. Saunders, II. These along with many others who are near by thru blood and friendship remain to mourn her loss. The church and community are better because of the fact that she lived and served in them. At the services music was furnished by a quartet from the church, Mrs. Paul Bottiger, Mrs. Paul Guthrie, Orvile Sutherland and Chas. J. Dobbs. Miss Caroleen Gilmore was at the piano. The body bearers were Fed Noble, Paul Bottiger, Eugene Parker, Fred ?, John ? and Warren Gilmore. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery.
