William Andrew Matthews of Vine street died suddenly this morning, about about 5 o'clock, from an attack of acute indigestion. Mr. Matthews had been in his usual health until within a few minutes before he expired. For a year he had been night watchman the County Home, Arden, and it was while he was on duty that he was stricken.
Mr. Matthews was born in Peters township, December 21, 1850, and was the son of the late James and Sarah Crawford Matthews. He learned the trade of blacksmithing and, conducted a blacksmith shop at McMurray for many years, selling out his business at that place in 1881, when he removed to Canonsburg, and engaged in the mercantile business in East Pike street. He conducted a grocery stores for several years and then sold his business. For several years thereafter he followed blacksmithing. About a year ago he became night watchman at the County Home at Arden, which position he held until the time of his death.

When quite a young man he united with the Peters Creek United Presbyterian Church, and when he removed to Canonsburg placed his certificate in the Greenside Avenue United Presbyterian Church. He was faithful in his attendance at the services of the church of his choice and always took an active part in church work.
Mr. Matthews was in the best of health last night when he went to Arden. This morning he awakened I the dairyman about 4 o'clock, and then went to the dining room of the County Heme for a lunch before boarding the first car to Canonsburg. It was while eating his lunch that he was stricken. A short time afterward he was found by Mrs. McNary and Miss Rankin. He was in an unconscious state when found and the County Home physician was summoned. Nothing could be done to save the stricken man and he passed away without regaining consciousness. Mr. Matthews was subject to attacks of indigestion. The physician pronounced the fatal attack as one of acute indigestion.
March 11, 1875, Mr. Matthews was united in marriage to Ella Margaret, daughter of the late John and Mary P. Fife.
He served a term as member of the Town Council of Canonsburg in 1901- 03.
He is survived by his wife, and the following children: Jay, Mrs. Ada Hensel, and Marguerite, at home; Mrs. Joseph M. Heagen, of Canonsburg; Mrs. Frank Richards, of Houston, and Mrs. Harry Wassum, of Briar Hill. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters, Leonard, 6f New Castle; Levi, of Coshocton, Chatham, of McMurray; Mrs. Tamar Milholland, of Norfolk, Va.; Mrs. William Caldwell, of Canonsburg, and Mrs. J. Harvey McMurray, of McMurray.
The funeral services will be held in the Greenside Avenue United Presbyterian Church, on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and will be In charge of the Rev. James H. Grier. Interment will be in 'Oak Spring cemetery.
