PETER PETERSON LAID TO REST
Peter PETERSON one of the pioneers of the Ashley Valley died at his home in Hayden, Saturday, May 14, of Dropsy brought on by wounds received in an explosion at White river five years ago.
Mr. PETERSON leaves a wife and eight children, five sons, J.F., J.O., D.J., F.T., J.H. and Alice KONE all of Hayden, Kate wife of Nelson MERKLEY and Christy wife of John WARDLE live in this valley.
Mr. PETERSON was born 63 years ago last February in Denmark and came to Utah when he was thirteen years old. He has made several trips across the plains with ox teams. He settled in Cedar Fort and in 1870 married Mary Elizabeth THURMAN. In 1879 he moved with his family to the Ashley valley and lived at first in the old fort. He took up a homestead joining Nelson MERKLEY on the south.
During the hard winter he was one of the four men who crossed over Diamond mountain to Green river city after flour for the famishing settlers. Those four men were Peter PETERSON, Cheil HALL, James HENRY and Dave WOODRUFF. They underwent hardships but got back with flour to save the settlers.
The funeral was held at the Glines Ward house, Bishop McKEE presiding. The speakers were George MERKLEY, an old friend of the Cedar Fort days, John G. DAVIS a friend and neighbor of Hayden, where Mr. PETERSON has lived for four years. R. S. COLLETT (not sure of this surname), O.H. GLINES and James O. NELSON, all were well acquainted with the deceased.
The flowers were in profusion, many came to pay their last respects to our old friend and pioneer. The interment was in the Maeser cemetery.
