Bernard L. Allaire, 68, of 1022 Matthews St., a prominent Bristol athlete during his high school years, died early this morning at Bristol Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Bristol Sept. 12, 1911, son of the late Pierre and Vitaline (Landry) Allaire and was a lifelong local resident.
He was graduated from St. Ann Grammar School, the Bristol High School Class of 1929 and attended Cheshire Academy and spent two years at Cornell University. He was one of the "Iron Men" on Thomas Monahan's state championship high school basketball team in 1929 and was named to the All-Star Basketball Team in 1928 and 1929. He received a record total of 13 letters in football, basketball, baseball and track at Bristol High School. At Cornell he was an All-American soccer goalie. In 1978 he won the Bristol Sports Reunion Award for his contribution to sports in Bristol.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was employed at Superior Electric Company for 18 years. He belonged to St. Joseph Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Stephanie (Kostizak) Allaire, and two sons, attorney Stephen R. Allaire, a former councilman, and Leonard O. Allaire, all of Bristol; a daughter, Mary L. Allaire of San Selmo, Calif.; two brothers, William Allaire of Florida and Orien Allaire of Windsor; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the Funk Funeral Home, 34 Bellevue Ave., to St. Joseph Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joslin Diabetes Foundation, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, Mass. 02215.
