Anna Abend, widow of the late Edward Abend, one of foremost builders of Belleville, passes away died at 5 o'clock Thursday morning at St. Vincent's Hospital. She would have been 79 years old next Saturday. She had been a patient at the hospital since last January. For several weeks her condition had been critical.

Mrs. Abend was a member of one of Belleville's leading families, and her husband had much to do with making the history of the city. She was the daughter of Theodore Hilgard, Sr., and was born on a farm near Belleville on May 27, 1837.

In 1855 she was married to Edward Abend, who was launching on his career of finance after deserting the practice of law. Subsequently, Mr. Abend rose to the top in financial and political endeavors. He was a member of the State Legislature in 1840 and served four terms as Mayor of Belleville. He was the chief promoter, in the pioneer period, for the St. Louis turnpike and other toll roads running from Belleville, and constructed the first street railroad in the city. He was foremost among the organizers of the Belleville Gas and Coke Company in 1856. In 1860 he was prominent in the organization of the institution which later became the Belleville Savings Bank. He was president of the bank and of the Belleville Brick Company when he died June 17, 1904. During his career he was also a director of the Illinois Central and Northern Pacific railways.

Six children were born to the union of Mr. Abend and Miss Anna Hilgard. Three survive:

Mrs. Lina E. Day, widow of John A. Day, St. Louis
Mrs. Helena Rumbold, wife of Major F. M. Rumbold, St. Louis
Edward Abend, Belleville

One son, Ernest, died last September.

Mrs. Abend leaves one brother, Theodore Hilgard, of Belleville, who is the last of a family of eight children, several of whom died recently. Mrs. P. M. Romeiser, a sister, passed away two months ago; Miss Amelia Hilgard, also a sister, three months ago, and a brother Ernest Hilgard, one and a half years ago.

The following grandchildren survive:
Misses Helen J. Day
Alice M. Day
Mrs. C.H.G. Heinfelden, a daughter of Mrs. Rumbold
Hallett E. Abend
Edward Will Abend

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of Edward Abend at 229 South High street to Walnut Hill Cemetery. Rev. C. A. Highfield will conduct the services at the house, and D. L. Turner, Sr., will speak at the grave. The pallbearers will be nephews: Dr. Theodore Romeiser, Richard W. Hilgard, Dr. George E. Hilgard, B. Waldo Hilgard, Harold Hilgard and Charles Abend.
