Mrs. Lina Abend Day, whose late husband, John A. Day, operated the old Day Line Railroad, an electric transportation system between Belleville and East St. Louis, died at 7 o'clock this morning in Long Island, N. Y., where she had been residing for the last 21 years.

Death following an illness of two years. She was 79 years of age.

Mr. Day, who died in Bellevelle in 1902, took over the railroad from the old Suburban Company after it had been built by Townsend and Reed. He operated the line for many years but later sold it to the St. Louis and Belleville Electric, which operates a coal line from Belleville to East St. Louis over the tracks.

Mrs. Day was a daughter of the late Edward Abend, Sr., who founded the Belleville Savings Bank in 1859 and remained president of the institution for 45 years until his death in 1904. Mr. Abend also founded the old gas and water works in Belleville, built the Belleville Electric Railroad and started many pike roads in this area. Her mother, Mrs. Anna H. Abend, died in Belleville in 1916.

Surviving are two daughters:

[Helen] Mrs. W. B. Buckham, Long Island
[Alice Marie] Miss M. Day, Long Island

... a brother, Edward Abend, 308 North Pennsylvania Avenue, president of the Belleville Brick Company; two nephews and a niece.

The body will be cremated in New York and the ashes will be brought here later by Mrs. Buckham to be buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery at the side of Mr. Day's grave.
