Wednesday afternoon he went home about 3 o'clock. His wife and child were away. He told the servant he was feeling badly, and would lie down for a while. When she went to arouse him for supper she found him dead on the bed.
He was a son of Hon. Edward Abend, President of the Belleville Savings Bank.
He leaves a wife and a son aged 11 years, who are visiting relatives at Belleville, and knew nothing of the affair until a message was forwarded to them several hours after the tragedy.
Mr. Abend was made City Surveyor by Mayor Stephens and was reappointed by Mayor Bader during his term. He was a member of the Knights of Honor and Modern Woodmen. He was just completing a handsome new residence at Eighth street and Baugh avenue.
The funeral will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

~ Married Kittie Hallett, daughter of Emma Converse and John L. Hallett, builder of the Union Pacific RR and other north western rail lines.
~ They had one son: Hallett Abend. Hallett received $10,000 from his grandfather's [Edward Abend] will in 1904. Hallet Abend was also an American Pulitzer Prize winning journalist.
~ Alexander's wife Kittie went on to marry John W. Bradbury (divorced).
~ Kittie appeared in the 1917 movie "The Immigant" with Charlie Chaplin and Edna Purviance.
~ Kittie worked with Chaplin again in 1923 "The Pilgrim" cast as his aunt.
