ILLNESS IS FATAL TO MISS VERENA NEAR:
The death of Miss Verena Catherine Near at the Shelby hospital on Friday, March 1, was a shock to the entire community. She had been ill about ten days. Miss near had been a life-long resident of the community and through her connection with various business institutions of the village was exceptionally well and favorably known throughout the territory. She was the daughter of the late Hardin Near and was born at the former family home in East Shelby now occupied by a brother, Benjamin Near, on June 16, 1980. She graduated from Shelby High School in 1924. Following her graduation she was associated in business for some time with her sister, Miss Ellen Near and brother, the late Charles Near, in the operation of Near's Cafe, later being employed by the Associated Telephone Co., and more recently acting as bookkeeper at the Near produce warehouse and the W. H. Near feed mill. She was one of the community's finest and most capable young women and she will be missed by a host of friends. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Almedia Near; two brothers, Omer Near and Benjamin Near of Shelby, and three sisters, Mrs. George Watson and Miss Ellen Near, Shelby and Mrs. Harry Beehler of Valparaiso, IN. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the Mennonite church and burial made in the church cemetery.
