Mr. Omer G. Near, 82, of 62 Ellis Street, Shelby, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, Nov . 17, at his residence. He was born July 8, 1895 in Shelby, the son of Hardin and Almedia Near. He married Laura Bankert April 22, 1917 in Valparaiso, Indiana. She passed away May 26, 1949. On June 24, 1951, he married Mrs. Mary Hunsberger in Wilmot, ON, Canada. Mr. Near was a life resident of Oceana County. He was employed by Swanson Construction of New Era, a number of years. He was a carpenter by trade and a member of the Reformed Mennonite Church. Mr. Near was a craftsman and spent leisure hours in his retirement years making clocks. Many of his grandfather clocks were fashioned from wood, which he had awed and cured from such beautiful woods as local walnut. He is survived by his wife, Mary, his daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jeanette) McCloy of Vernon, Michigan; a step daughter, Mrs. Wilfred (Kathleen) Steinman of Napanee, ON, Canada; a brother, Benjamin H. Near of Shelby; three sisters, Mrs. George (Grace) Watson of Shelby, Mrs. Harry (Jessie) Beehler of Hamburg, ON, Canada and Mrs. Ivan (Ellen) Dunlop of Shelby; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Near were held 9 am Sat. Nov. 19 at the Reformed Mennonite Church, with Warren Bankert, officiating. Interment was in the Mennonite Cemetery.
