Van C. Bell, 73, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2000, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 15, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Knoxville, or the Leukemia Research Foundation in his memory.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 16, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, Illinois, with full Military Honors conducted by the Galesburg Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.

Van Cleveland Bell was born February 11, 1927, in Hardyville, Kentucky, the son of Grover and Millie (Jeffries) Bell. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in France and Germany, during World War II. He married Katherine Williams in 1947, in Kentucky. Together they moved to Galesburg. They were the parents of Phillip, Kenneth and James. Van and Katherine were later divorced. He married Deanna Jean (Harmsen) Roehlk on November 26, 1966, in Galesburg. They were the parents of Bridget. Van and Deanna were later divorced. He married Karen Jo (Nylin) Greene on April 9, 1988, in Knoxville. He owned and operated the Bell Applicance Store in Galesburg, until he sold the store. He then worked 15 years at the former O.T. Johnson Store in Galesburg and as a security guard at Dick Blick Company in Galesburg, until he retired. In the past, he worked at A.A. Schneiderhahn Company Appliance Distributor and Electronic in West Des Moines, Weickel Line Company in Indiana and T.A. Haywood Company installing telephone lines for Bell Telephone Company in Indiana.

Surviving are his wife, Karen; one daughter, Bridget Bell of Las Vegas, NV; three sons, Phillip, Kenneth and James P. Bell, all of Louisville, KY; two step-daughters, Kari Buckman of Maquon and Susan (Jeffrey) Buch of Fairfield, IA; three step-sons, Douglas Roehlk of Las Vegas, NV, Brett (Laurie) Roehlk of Coggon, IA, and Keith Greene of Knoxville; four grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lizzie Richardson of Hodgenville, KY.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Lelo Jones, Pauline Shuffett, Elois Thompson and Mazetta Carothers, one brother, Leo Bell, one brother-in-law, Wilburn Richardson and one nephew, Eldon Jones.
