Laura M. Allen was born in August 1849 in Haywood County, North Carolina, the eldest of nine children of Jeremiah "Jerry" Allen (1828-1918) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Hyatt Allen (1829-1914). She was married to William A. Tittle (1853-bef.1900) on 14 March 1875 in Waynesville, NC. They had four children: Emily (Emma) (1876-1967), John Henry (1878-1950), Lydia C. (1881-1967), and Frank Wesley (1885-1955). Their youngest daughter Lydia was "adopted" by her younger brother William H. Allen (1853-1933) and his wife Malissa Farmer Allen (1847-1926) in the 1900 census--after her death in 1894 at the age of 45.
