Sussex Register newspaper - DIED: Lucy, relict of Joseph Northrup, May 4, 1845, at Andover, age 77.

Research by J. Kelsey Jones in 1988:
Lucy Price m. 23 July 1786 (justice docket of Francis Price) Joseph Northrup b. 7 Jan 1765 (The Northrup-Northrop Genealogy) Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey son of Benjamin Northrup and Leonora Whitehead. Benjamin and Leonora removed from Bateman's Point, Dutchess County, New York to Sussex County, New York. In The Northrup-Northrup Genealogy 7 Jan 1765 is given as date of birth for both Lucy and Joseph, which is unlikely and perhaps an error. Joseph and Lucy are related to have resided at Springdale before removing to Sparta. Joseph owned considerable land in and near the village of Sparta, Sussex County and had a store, tavern, grist mill, and other business interests. In 1810, Daniel Hurd purchased 256 acres of farming land and 500 acres of timber land from Joseph and Lucy, which included a store, tavern, blacksmith shop, grist mill, saw mill, and a forge or two. About 1810, Joseph purchased about 700 acres where the village of Andover now stands. The Northrup family resided in the stone mansion that had been built by Allen & Turner who were involved in the iron works. Joseph operated a store in a portion of the mansion. In 1816 the store was moved to an old mill, having converted the furnace to a mill. At some point the stone mansion burned, but the walls remained. The mansion was rebuilt. In 1828, a distillery was built. He was also engaged in farming. He became the first postmaster of Andover, which appointment he retained until his death. Joseph d. 21 June 1841 (The Northrup-Northrop Genealogy). In the History of Sussex County by Snell he relates that "his (Joseph) interests and duties were multifarious, and he was, as may be imagined, a man of more than ordinary consequences." Estate of Joseph Northrup, Esq. (SB:477) located in Newton township near stone bridge over Pequest and near Sheeler's tavern. Matthias Hemmover petitioned court in right of his wife, Lucy. Heirs: Lucy Hemmover, Abigail Griggs wife of George Griggs, Ann Owens wife of Jonathan Owens, Leonora Rhodes wife of George Rhodes, Mary Smith wife of Robert L. Smith, Charlotte Henderson deceased wife of John C. Henderson left son Robert Henderson, a minor, Joseph Northrup Jr., Benjamin Northrup, deceased, leaving children Mary and Robert, both minors, widow Lucy, dower in village of Andover. Will (2417S) of Lucy dated 20 June 1843 Andover, named son Joseph and James L., and Ellsworth B., sons of Joseph. Probated 16 May 1845. Lucy d. 4 May 1845 (The Northrup-Northrop Genealogy).
