George Washington Starns/Starnes was the only son and third of four (there may have been more) children born to Nicholas Starnes (1756-1835), a Soldier of the Revolution, and his wife Barbara Winters (c.1793-1861). He was born in Rhea County, Tennessee and spent his childhood in Alabama.

I believe George's paternal grandfather was Leonard Starns (c.1726-1782), of Washington County, Virginia. His known siblings were Nancy Starnes (Mrs. E. J. Bradshaw), Margaret P. Starnes (1817-1907, Mrs. J. W. Cowan) and Sarah L. Starnes (1833-1929, Mrs. Besheers, later Mrs. Isaac Ellis). The census records suggest George may have been born in 1819, but the tombstone says 1821.

George married Martha A. Brashears (1822-1887). She may, or may not, have been related to the Besheers who married his sister Sarah. Her widowed mother, Mary Brashears (born Tennessee c. 1804) was living with the family in 1880.

The children I have for George & Martha are: William Nicholas Starnes (1844-1905), Nancy C. Starnes (c.1846-1876, tombstone says born 1844), Eliza Ann Starnes (1849-1929, Mrs. Turner), Mary E. (c. 1851), Alfred (c.1853), Susan C. (1855-1884, never married, buried here), James D. (c.1857), Lewis N (c.1859), Harvey C. (c. 1861), George W., Jr. (c.1863) and Sarah "Sallie" (c. 1865). I am still researching his family, and will add more information shortly.

Many thanks to Stephen Erwin, who created this and other Starnes memorials in this cemetery, and kindly transferred them to me, a cousin. (George's father Nicholas was a nephew of my 5th great grandfather, Joseph Starns, 1732-1779.)
