Nicholas Starnes (Starns, Stearns) was probalby a son of Leonard Starns (c.1726-1782) and a grandson of Frederick Staring/Starns/Starnes (c.1700-1774). He stated in his pension application that he was born in Cecil Co., Maryland, but enlsted in 1776 in Washington Co., VA (where all of the above Starnes lived at the time.) He served under Capt. William Crabtree and Capt. Campbell in the Virginia Militia during the Revoltionary War. He was living in Roane Co., TN in 1805, and had moved to Rhea Co., TN by 1816.

I don't know if Nicholas had a first wife, but in 1816, he married Barbara Winters (c.1784/93-1861) in Rhea County, Tennessee. Around 1821/22, they moved to Blount Co., Alabama. In 1834, he was living in Jefferson Co., Alabama, and applied for a pension as a Soldier of the Revolution.

Apparenty. shortly before his death, they moved to McNairy Co., TN. He was on a trip back to Alabama to conduct some business there when he died in Talladega Co., AL. in May 1835.

The children of Nicholas Starnes & Barbara Winteres were:

1. Nancy Starnes m. Elias Bradshaw, d. Muscogee Co., Oklahoma. Find A Grave # 73865984

2. Margaret "Peggy" Starnes (1817-1907) m. John Wesley Cowan, d. Marion Co., Ark., Find A Grave # 24075054

3. George Washington Starnes (1821-1885) m. Martha, d. Madison Co., Ark., Find A Grave # 115318748

"I am working on a project to preserve the integrity of the actual participants of the Battle of King's Mountain. Nicholas Starnes, DAR Ancestor Number A109421, was one of those Heroes. Would you consider expanding his bio to include that fact? His participation in BKM was documented by W26445... Thank you for your consideration!
