William Nicholas Starnes, who seems most often to appear in records as William N. (though his tomsbtone just has Nicholas), was a son of George Washington Starnes and his wife Martha A. Brashears. His paternal grandfather was Nicholas Starnes (1756-1835), a Soldier of the Revolution.

Nicholas married Elizabeth A. "Bette" Rucker, a daughter of Elliot and Rebecca Rucker of Missouri. According to the 1900 census, they were married circa 1868, and had 10 children, 7 then living.

The children were: Elliot F. Starnes (c. 1869), Samantha R. (March 1871-Jan. 1934 Madison Co., Ark., m. George Culwell), Nancy (March 1873), Francis M. Starnes (27 Feb. 1875-18 May 1875) Martha (Jan. 1876), Walter Elmer (13 Aug. 1878-Jan. 1943, d. Washington Co., Ark.), Fred (22 Dec. 1880-16 May 1881), Willey P. (21 Sept. 1886-10 Oct. 1889*), Anna (May 1889)and Jason E. (Aug. 1891).

* Willey P.'s tomsbtone says "Son of W. N. & L. E. Starns" most of the other children's stones say "Son of W. N. & E. A. Starns." I expect this is just a mistake of the stonecarver, however I suppose it is possilbe Willey was the son of another W. N. Starns.

Many thanks to Stephen Erwin, who created this and other Starnes memorials in this cemetery, and kindly transferred them to me, a cousin.
