Mr. Shanks, a veteran of World War II, died Sunday morning at the Veteran's Hospital in Nashville after a long illness. He participated in the European campaign and was awareded the Purple Heart in 1944.
After his discharge, Mr. Shanks was employed in Oak Ridge until failing health necessitated his resignation. He then moved to Baxter where he resided until his hospitalization several months ago.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Vennie Carr Shanks, one son, Fred Shanks, Jr., parents, Mr. and Mrs. Van Shanks, Baxter; 3 brothers, Virgle, Haskell and Floyd Shanks, all of Detroit, Mrs. Marvin Brewington, Baxter, Mrs. Herman Briggs, Mrs. James T. Grisham, Mrs. Tom Floyd, of Old Hickory, and Mrs. Hara Lee Anderson, of Oak Ridge.
