Mattie Martha Grable was the second of eight children born to Thomas Riley Grable and his wife Mary Elizabeth Rousey. She was born near Geary City, Doniphan County, Kansas, April 25, 1878. She first married Frank L. Sowles, who was born March 7, 1867, Pawpaw,Illinois. Frank died August 1959 at Atchison, Kansas and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, in Effingham, Atchison County, Kansas. Her second marriage was to a Marion J. Rowe.
Frank and Mattie had three children:
Ruth Ann Sowles, b. April 3, 1895, Effingham, Kansas
Clyde Wilbur Sowles, b. March 7, 1897, Effingham, Kansas

Ruth Ann first married Edward Beckley, November 14, 1913, Garden Ciy, Finney County, Kansas. They had no children. Her second marriage was to Glenn Clifton Jefferies, born October 12, 1891, Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John & Elizabeth Jefferies. There were no children of this marriage either.
Clyde Wilber married Gladys Snyder, who was born May 15, 1899. They married in Effingham, Kansas, on May 12 1920. They had no children. He married secondly, but her name is unknown. They had no children.
Esther Marcelia married December 8, 1915, Garden City, Kansas to Floyd Pleasant Rowe. He was born March 13, 1886, Pleasanton, Kansas. He was the son of Thomas and Amanda Rowe. They had two children:
