When Thomas purchased the home he put in a new furnace, which appeared to be the cause of the fire. "Grace & Clara departed this life in a fire which destroyed the family's farm home. Their father Thomas Riley and a cousin [nephew of Thomas] Charles Grable also were injured in the fire but both lived. Thomas Riley was on the upper story of the home to rescue the children when the floor gave way throwing him thru the window to the ground outside, the daughters however perished in the flames. The cousin Charle [Irvin] Grable suffered severe burns and carried the scars the rest of his life some seventy years afterwards. [He was a very brave and caring young fellow, not yet twelve years old.]" Find A Grave Memorial for Charlie is #78842952.

About 1908 Tom and Mary moved to the Garden City, Finney County, Kansas area, where he was a prominent farmer for a number of years.
