He was engaged in the grain elevator business and was president of the Chicago Board of Trade. He built his residence at 1945 S. Prairie Ave. in about 1872. In 1879 the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts was organized and Armour was elected as it's first president. Three years later the organization was renamed the Art Institute of Chicago.
