Henry F. Lewer, Sr., Popular Waseca County Farmer Dies Tuesday
Henry F. Lewer, one of Waseca county's best known and most successful farmers, passed away last Tuesday evening at his home in this city. Death was due to cancer of the stomach, from which he had been suffering for some time, but he was seriously ill for only two weeks. Deceased was a native of Hanover, Germany, and was born on Dec. 6, 1853. He came to America with his parents when 13 years old. They lived a short time in La Crosse, Wis., then moved to Owatonna, which was the end of the railroad at that time. After a stay of six months in Owatonna they located on a farm in Vivian township, where deceased grew to manhood. He and his father walked from Owatonna to Vivian and when they were passing through what is now Woodville township he said there was an eclipse of the sun. The unusual sight made an impression on the lad which he remembered ever afterwards. After reaching manhood Mr. Lewer spent a short time in the employ of the North Western railroad in Waseca and then purchased the farm in Woodville township which was his home until he retired from active work and moved to Waseca 20 years ago. He was unusually successful in his farm work and became one of the largest land owners in the county. He also took an active interest in public affairs. He was clerk of his home school district for more than 20 years, was township assessor for 13 years and county commissioner for eight terms. He also served as president and manager of Oakwood creamery for 22 years, was director of the Iosco Farmers Elevator Co. In all his dealings with his fellowmen Mr. Lewer was always upright and honorable and he enjoyed the respect and esteem of the community to an extent shared by few men. It can truly be said that in his passing the community has lost a good citizen. On Nov. 14, 1879, Mr. Lewer was married to Miss Helena Scholljegerdes. Eight children were born to this union, only three of whom survive. Of the deceased, four died in infancy, three being triplets. The fifth, Henry Lewer, Jr., died three years ago. The survivors, with their mother, are John, Martin and Ewald Lewer, all of this community. There are also 11 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. D. Frahman of Woodville. The funeral will take place at 2:15 p. m. Friday from St. John's Lutheran church in this city and the remains will be laid to rest in Woodville cemetery.
