The Royal Navy.
S.S. "Rio Verde" (London)
Aged 42.
Husband of Agnes Buchan, of 196, Wheatland Lane, Seacombe, Cheshire.
Stewart Buchan and Agnes Adamson were married in West Derby, Liverpool, in the quarter ended September 1905.
SS Rio Verde was built in 1901 at Irvine's Yard, West Hartlepool. Built as SS. Austriana, she was re-named in 1915, and was defensively armed.
Stewart Buchan of the Royal Navy was one of at least three Naval Gunners of the gun detachment on board a defensively armed Merchant Navy vessel. The Royal Navy provided crew and a 4in gun to Merchant vessels in an attempt to counter the effects of German submarines on coastal shipping. The gun was normally mounted aft.
Rio Verde was sunk on 23 February 1918 by German submarine U-86, about 4 miles west of Crammock Head, [now Crammag Head] Galloway, [in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland] whilst on a voyage from Glasgow to Milford Haven, Wales, with a cargo of coal.
20 lives were lost, including the Master. 7 bodies were eventually recovered.
It would appear that Stewart Buchan's body was washed ashore in County Louth, Ireland, some time later.
The body of an unknown male Seaman, thought to be aged about 50, was found on 7 March 1918, on the beach at Greenore, Co. Louth.
The cause of death was Drowning.
Inquest held on 8 March 1918 at Greenore.
