A graduate of Shady Spring High School in Daniels, she attended Concord State Teacher's College in Athens, graduating and receiving her teaching certificate in 1942. Ms. Virts taught in the Raleigh County school system during 1942 and 1943. Then locating to Norfolk, Va., during World War II. Moving to Maryland, Zelda taught in the Anne Arundel and Frederick County school systems, continuing her education, graduating from the University of Maryland in 1955, and obtaining an advancd professional master's certificate in 1972. Ms. Virts' 32 years in the teaching profession included teaching various elementary grades, as well as serving as vice-president of Brunswick Elementary School in Maryland from 1972 until her retirement in 1981.
Zelda was a resident of the Knoxville community of Washington County, Maryland until 1989, and the Uvilla community of Jefferson County, until 2011. She was a member of Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Virts; brothers, Shelvie Griffith, Harry Griffith, and sister, Rosemary Emmons.
Left to celebrate her life are sons, Gene Lilly of Pasadena, Md., and Brent Virts of Gate City, Va.; sisters, Margaret Alexander of Hendersonville, Tn., and Bonnie Garten of Summerville, SC; brother, Gen. Mannie Rondell Griffith of Martinsburg; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Following cremation, a graveside service and interment took place at the Knoxville Reformed Cemetery in Maryland.
