George Yardley Boyd was born in Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania April 16, 1837. He was the son of John Boyd, who was born in 1802, and Susan Letitia Yardley Boyd. George was a member of Co. C. Ninth Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War, having enlisted after the family moved to Illinois, August 1861. He was discharged twice. First after an injury, Feb. 1863 but after re-enlisting in Feb. 24, 1865 he was discharged Oct 31, 1865. He returned to farm in Henry County. Illinois. December 30, 1869 he married Sarah Matheson and they remained in Henry County and can be found here in the 1870 census.
Here they stayed until late 1870 when he came to Iowa, with his wife and they had their first child, a daughter, then settling in Hamilton County. Finally in 1881 he and his family of six returned to and settled near Duncombe, Webster County, were he and Sarah stayed until his death.

Sarah A. Matheson and George had seven children together. There were five girls - Grace, Susie, Jessie, Ruth, and Frances. The two boys were Ellwood and George W. Boyd. They all survived him at the time of his death in 1917 and all, but Frances, were married.
