Tommy was the fourth of the seventeen children of General Wite Eades and Ita (Gosser) Eades. He became "Tommy" because of his fascination with "Tailspjn Tommy," his favorite comic book character. He served in the US Army during World War II, and was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a POW but escaped from the Japanese POW camp after 13 days. Tom began working at Inland Steel when he was 17, and worked there for 37 years. He married Irene Lipcovich on October 10, 1953 in Crown Point, Indiana. Tom and Irene moved to Bement, Illinois six years later and remained.

Tom died from effects of stomach cancer. He is survived by his second wife, Irene; six brothers, and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. A memorial service was held February 22, 2013 at the Roux Hinds Funeral Home in Bement, Illinois, with brother-in-law Marty King officiating. Burial is in Monticello Township Cemetery.
