William was the son of David and Elizabeth (Curns) Baldwin. He was born in New Jersey. He traveled with his parents, three brothers and two sisters to Michigan in the 1850s.
William married Janette Jane Mead on 1 Jan 1867. They had four children: Alice, Mary, Nellie and Eva.
