David and Elizabeth came from New Jersey traveling over the mountains with an ox team and horses. They settled in the woods at Ruggles Mills which is known today as Baroda."Mr and Mrs David R. Baldwin, two brothers and one sister are sleeping in Ruggles Cemetery."[Lake Township Pioneers dated Feb 29, 1928]
David and Elizabeth had three sons who served during the Civil War: George, Charles and Elias. George was a Lieutenant in the Army, served three years and re-enlisted. He used to write home that he would rather fight the rebs than eat when he was hungry. Family tradition says George ventured out on horseback and was killed during the Battle of Jonesboro (Georgia) on 31 Aug 1864. Charles was stricken with fever and rallied and was sent home to regain his health. He got as far as Buchanan and died. Elias came home and lived to be an old man.
