Margaret was the first child born to David and Elizabeth Curns Baldwin. Her parents married in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania and moved to Essex County, NJ shortly after Margaret's birth. She came to Michigan with her parents in the 1850s.
Margaret and Joel Starr were married in 1861. They had seven children: Mary, Martha, Joel, George, Egbert, Laura and Charles. Mary, George and Egbert died in July of 1872. Joel, Laura and Charles died in infancy. Mary died of puerperal fever seven days after baby Charles died.
In 1876 Joel married second Mary Hoisington with whom he had three children: Lucy, Emma and Henry.
