Clothing Catches Fire While Playing With Kerosine
Russel R. the four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Pennock, of ?? North Third street, died at his home, Friday at 2 p.m. of burns received while at play five weeks ago.
The lad, with his two brothers and a sister, was playing in the yard of their home, Eighth and Buttonwood streets, where they lived at the time of the accident. One of the older boys found a pan of kerosine, ????with childish delight, they set it on fire. Fooling around the raging oil Carl, one of the children gave the pan a kick, scattering the burning fluid over the child. In an instant he was a mass of flames from head to foot. Le Roy, his oldest brother, aged 11 years, attempted to extinguish the fire by throwing water over the burning child. Neighbors hearing the cries, rushed to the assistance of the children and beat out the flames, but not before the lad had received injuries which later proved fatal. The child was carried to the Homeopathic Hospital. The boy was almost completely covered with burns, his right side being the worst. Remaining at the hospital four days the lad became homesick and was removed in the junior ambulance to his residence, ??? his parents moved to 505 North Third street, the Junior ambulance was again pressed into service. After suffering agony for the 5 weeks Russel expired leaving besides his parents two brothers Le Roy W. and Carl G. and one sister Helen. ~~Reading Eagle, Reading, PA 9 Nov 1912~~
