Born Johan Arvid Dahlstrom, he took the last name of Hansson for his father, Hans, as was the custom. After immigrating to US via Ellis Island on the "SS Cymric" May 4, 1903, he had assumed the names of Johan Arvid Hansson, then John Arvid Hanson, and finally Hansen due to an administrative misspelling. John was a carpenter and self trained building designer/architect, working in Cuba, the Panama Canal, and the Hudson Tunnel among others. Buildings that he designed stand to this day. John, married a Norwegian girl, Ellen Amanda Huseby, who he met in NYC. They lived in Jersey City before John designed and built a house in Lyndhurst, NJ. where they raised and educated 8 children and left 22 grandchildren and numerous great granndchildren.
