George Washington Coberly was born December 11, 1827 in Delaware County, Ohio. He was the last child, and only son of George and Matilda Lewis Coberly. George and Matilda also had five daughters — Amanda Humble (1817-1898), Charlotte Elizabeth Jennings (1819-), Sarah Ann Pendleton (1821-1877), Adelia “Delia” Thomas (1823-1891) and Elizabeth Deardorff (1825-1899).

George Washington’s father, George William Coberl(e)y (1788-1855), was married three times —Sarah Bean (1791-1816), Matilda Lewis (1798-1828) and Mary Ann Matthews (1813-1901). During his three marriages, George William fathered 14 children.

George Washington Coberly married Joanna Salisbury on August 28, 1845 in Delaware County, Ohio. George and Joanna had three children —James Hezekiah Coberly (1846-1924), Lewis W. Coberly (1848-1922) and Rachel Minerva Wallsmith (1853-1915). George and Joanna divorced before 1861.

On November 4, 1861, George married Elizabeth McCreary (1839-1886) in Hancock County, Illinois. On August 2, 1862, George enlisted in the Union Army. He was in the Ohio 95th Infantry Regiment. George was mustered out of the army on Aug. 14, 1865 at Louisville, KY.

George and Elizabeth had 13 children —Ada Mary King (1862-1942), Emma Elizabeth Thruston (1863-1931), Malinda Ann Norcross (1864-1918), Ollie Margaret Donovan (1866-1935), George Edward (1867-1946), Levi Jesse (1869-1960), Sarah “Sallie” Mangis (1871-1943), John Franklin (1872-1964), Robert Benjamin (1874-1944), Elizabeth Penelope Hill (1875-1966), Matilda Ellen (1878-1878), Delia Iantha (1878-1886) and Fredrick Joseph (1880-1948).

Initially, the family lived in Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois where their first four children were born. They moved to Chillicothe, Missouri and next to Cliquot, Polk County, Missouri where George, a farmer, and the family homesteaded a farm.

Elizabeth died of pneumonia on Feb. 18, 1886 in Bolivar, Missouri.

On Aug. 8, 1886, six months after Elizabeth died, George W married Amanda Phipps Lawrence (1856-1935). Amanda had a son, Samuel Thomas Lawrence (1876-1962), from her first marriage to George W. Lawrence.

George and Amanda had one child, Loretta Adeline, who was born on Dec. 4, 1887.

In October. 1906, George visited two of his children, Robert Benjamin Coberly and Emma Thruston in Oklahoma. During his visit, George Washington Coberly suffered an asthma attack and died on November 29, 1906. George was buried in Rigdon Cemetery, Crescent, Logan County, Oklahoma. According to Thelma Coberly, George’s son, Robert, who was an ordained minister, conducted his father’s funeral service.
