BALLARD

Mildred Ruth Dorthea Ballard, daughter of John and Emma Erickson Carlson, was born July 15, 1898, on a farm near Chariton. She passed from this life Sept. 9, 1997, at the age of 99 years, one month and 25 days, following a long and debilitating illness. Mildred had spent the last 18 years of her life at the Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

On Oct. 29, 1924, Mildred was united in marriage to Harry A. Ballard. To this union four children were born: three daughters, Ruth, Gladys and Marie, and one son, John Allen.

Mildred was baptized in the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church on Oct. 2, 1898. She spent most of her life on a farm helping her husband and raising her children. After retiring and moving to Chariton, Mildred enjoyed crocheting, watching TV and babysitting. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, two brothers, her granddaughter, Jenny Ballard, and two sons-in-law, Richard (Buzz) Runnells and Dwight Stephens.

Mildred is survived by her children, Ruth Stephens of Chariton, Gladys Pierschbacher and husband Raymond of Chariton, Marie Runnells and friend Dale Parrish of Ankeny and John Ballard and wife Carol of Washburn. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene Carlson of Chariton and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, at the Fielding Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Nielson officiating. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. Bearers included Raymond Pierschbacher, Zeke Sanders, Roger Bauman, Randy Pierschbacher, Monte Hutchings and Jeff Bauman.
