Elizabeth was the daughter of Isola Elizabeth "Birdie" (Lewis) and Benjamin Franklin Hays. She grew up in and around Sedalia, Missouri, but moved with her mother to Kansas City, Missouri when she was about 14 years old and remained there the rest of her life.

She had dark blue eyes and beautiful black hair. She was known for her lovely singing voice.

Elizabeth was the wife of Edward T. Bickell. Their children were Edde Frances (Bickell) Mayer and Bill Alexander Bickell.

Elizabeth was only 30 when she unexpectedly died from an internal systemic infection.
