Known as Lee, he was the oldest child of Eula T. (Wells) and Benjamin Franklin Hays. Lee's mother died a week after his 6th birthday. He and his brother, B.F., were raised by their aunt, Mayme (nee Hays), and uncle, William Grinstead.
Lee first married Sophie, who died in a car accident in Kansas City, Kansas in 1937. On August 14, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois, Lee married Mildred Smith, a marriage that would span 51 years. Shortly after marrying, Lee and Mildred moved to Kansas City, Kansas where their chidren, Patricia Ann, Brenda Sue and Julie Lee, were all born. In 1961, Lee was trasferred to Birmingham, Alabama. In 1969, the family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Transferred once again, the couple lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, and then moved to Atlanta, Georgia where they spent 12 years in retirement. In 1990, Lee and Mildred moved to River's Edge Retirement Home in Sacramento, California.
