Known as Mercedes, she was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Hays and Eula T. (Wells) Hays.

Mercedes' mother died in childbirth. She was raised by her Aunt Lura and Uncle Henry Douglas "News" Hays, as their own. Her mother was the sister of Aunt Lura and her father was the brother of Uncle News, so their children and Mercedes were double cousins.

On November 6, 1939, Mercedes married Earl R. Clenin.

from her obituary:
"Eula Mercedes Clenin died June 7, 2003 at Independence Regional Health Center. Buried at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Born April 10, 1919 in Fortuna to Ben and Eula Hays. Graduated from Fortuna High School and later worked for the California Manufacturing Plant, Western Auto and Shop & Go. Active member of Christ United Methodist Church.
Preceded in death by parents, Ben and Eula Hays, brothers, Lee and Emmet Hays, and her sisters, Mildred and Merrice Hays*."

*Since Mercedes was raised by her aunt and uncle, Lura and News Hays, their children Emmet, Mildred and Merrice were thought of as siblings, although, in fact, they were Mercedes' double cousins.
