He was known in the family by his middle name, Chauncey. He was only 3 1/2 when his father died. Chauncey was raised by his paternal uncle and aunt, Tom and Lizzie Hays, with their three children: Gilbert Benjamin; Josiah Vencil and Izola Elizabeth. He graduated from Versailles High School in Versailles, Missouri in 1933. He earned an Associates Degree in Bookkeeping from Kansas City College of Commerce and attended the American Institute of Banking for 1 year; both in Kansas City, Missouri. He worked for Commerce Trust Company in the Chief Clerk's section in the City Collections and Trust Department where he supervised 10 clerks and bookkeepers.

On August 18, 1942, Chauncey enlisted in the Army Air Corps. According to his enlistment record, he was 5' 4" tall, weighed 163 pounds, and had blue eyes and brown hair. He was an airplane maintenance technician who served as a crew chief on C-47 transport planes delivering troops to combat. He did all types of maintenance and inspection work on transport aircraft. He acted as flight chief, supervising the maintenance of 10 airplanes. He was then a group inspector and was responsible for the maintenance and inspection of 80 planes. Chauncey was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant and had served in Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Italy, Rome, Italy, Po Valley, Italy, Germany, France, India, and Burma. He had earned a PURPLE HEART, AMERICAN DEFENSE SERVICE RIBBON, and a GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL. His Army Serial number was 17-029-837.
