The portrait that Joan painted of her was given to her great grand niece, Margie Allred.

Margaret's birth name was Ella, which she used as her middle name. She spent her early years in Texas. In the 1930's, she was briefly married to X. Y. Zeveley, whom divorced her. She married T J Vance in Arkansas in 1943.

She was 17 years old when her three-year-old nephew, Billy Allred, came to live with her parents. He always loved her and named his daughter for her. Margaret died on January 10, 1996 in Laguna Beach, California. She was cremated and her ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
