Grant R. Smith married Alma Jacobson on March 23, 1946 in WI. They had 3 children: James, Ramona & Susan Smith. Inducted in the U.S. Army Air Force in April 1942. He served as a bombardier in the 94th Bomber Group Command with the 8th Air Force flying B-17s on 33 missions.

Viroqua,Wis. - Grant R. Smith, 85, of rural Viroqua passed away on Wednesday morning, Sept. 22, 2004.

He was born on June 24, 1919, in Viola to Halley and Mary (Eckleberry) Smith. He graduated from Viola High School in 1937 where he was active in track. He worked for farmers in Iowa before he was inducted in the U.S. Army Air Force in April 1942. He served as a bombardier in the 94th Bomber Group Command with the 8th Air Force flying B-17's on 33 missions. He was discharged in October of 1945.

On March 23, 1946, he married Alma Jacobson. They farmed at rural Viola until 1952 when they purchased the farm at rural Viroqua. He retired in 1981. They have continued to live on the family farm until his health condition was such that he became a resident of the Vernon Manor nine days ago. Grant enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching sports of all types and spending time with friends and family. He liked to share his memories of his childhood days, growing up in the log cabin on Ash Ridge at rural Viola in Richland County. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua where had served on the church council and American Legion Post 138 of Viroqua.

Grant is survived by his wife, Alma; two daughters, Ramona (Dennis) Skrede of Viroqua, and Susan (Mark T.) Jacobson of Westby, Wis.; one son, Jim (Kris) Smith of Park Forest, Ill.; six grandchildren, Jeffrey (Louise) Skrede of Castle Rock, Colo., Jay Skrede of Viroqua, Rebekah and Israel Smith of Park Forest, Jennifer Jacobson of Chanhassen, Minn., Jed Jacobson of La Crosse; three sisters, Alice Gochenhaur of Richland Center, Wis., Avis Bee of La Farge, Wis., Ruby Nevel of Viola, Wis., other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glen and Verlyn Smith; and one sister, Ruth Kotthaus.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 27, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua with Pastor Charles Sheppard officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery with military rites by the Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post 3032 and Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post 138. Friends may call on Sunday afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. at Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Friends may also call at the church after 10 a.m. on Monday.
