Halley Martin Smith was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on July 18, 1888, the son of Milton and Margaret Smith. His early boyhood days were spent in Beloit, and the remainder of his life he lived in Richland County.
On February 13, 1910, Halley was united in marriage to Mary Ekleberry at the home of her parents in the township of Bloom. They farmed in the town of Forest until 1946 when they retired and moved to Viola.
Halley served for a time on the Richland County Board and the Pleasant View School Board.
Halley had been a patient for about the past eight months at the Vernon County Hospital where he passed away on December 16, 1973, at the age of 85 years.
He leaves to mourn his passing two sons, Grant, of Route 4, Viroqua, and Verlyn, of Richland Center, and four daughters, Alice, Mrs. Veron Gochenaer, and Avis, Mrs. Paul Bee, of Viola, Ruby, Mrs. Frank Ocain, of Rogers, Arkansas, and Ruth, Mrs. Ed Kotthaus, of Janesville. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 27 greatgrandchildren and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 1965 and one son, Glenn.

A funeral services honoring the memory of Halley Smith was held at the Viola United Methodist Church on Tuesday, December 18, 1973, with Rev. Barry Watson and Rev. Charles Sheppard officiating. Donald Larson offered appropriate vocal selections, accompanied by Mrs. Robert Reed. Casket bearers who served were all grandchildren and included Jim Smith, Carl Smith, Gordon Smith, Charles Gochenaur, Robert Ocain and Gene Kotthaus. The Beler Funeral Home staff co-ordinated all services and the interment which was in the Viola Cemetery.
