Zillah "Zillie" (Miller?) O'Neal was the first or second of eleven children born to Kindred O'Neal (c. 1785-1855) and his wife Culia Hayles (1790s-1840s), who were married in Johnston County, NC in 1810, and moved almost immediately to Anson County, NC.

Zillah, whose name was sometimes spelled Zillie or Zella or Zily, married Hugh A. Beachum (1806-1861), a son of Alexander Beachum and his wife Elizabeth Shelton. Zillie's sister, Phereba O'Neal (1818-1888) married Hugh's brother, Isaiah Beachum (1812-1894). Hugh and Zillie had seven children. Zillie lost her husband, 2 sons and a daughter during the War between the States. Two other sons served in the Confederate army, but survived the War.

The children of Hugh and Zillie O'Neal Beachum were: Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910, married 3 times, his first wife Mary Jane Taylor was mother to all 14 of his children), Joseph J. Beachum (c.1832/3-1865, never married), Harriet Jane Beachum (1834-1872, Mrs. James B. Dees), James Thomas Beachum (1837-1907, m. Margaret Adeline Sikes), William Henry Beachum (c.1840-1862, m. Miss McIntire), Daniel K. Beachum (1847-1923, m. twice, Tabitha Dean & Annie E. Simmons) and Christina Clementine Beachum (1854-1862, died of diptheria at age 8).

Note: There may have been two more children. There was an Allen Beachum, age 9, and a Mary A. Beachum, age 7, listed on the 1850 Anson Co. mortality schedule. They died in June of 1849, of "sore throat" (probably diptheria). I don't know if they were Hugh and Zillie's children, or Isaiah and Phereba's.
