Harriet Jane Beachum was the third child and first daughter born to Hugh A. Beachum (1806-1861) and Zillie O'Neal (1812-1882). of Anson County, North Carolina. Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Beachum and his wife Elizabeth Shelton, and her maternal grandparents were Kindred O'Neal and his wife Culia Hayles.

Harriet married James B. Dees (1833-1894) in 1857> He was a son of Clement Allen Dees and his wife Elizabeth Braswell, of Union County, NC. James B. Dees served in the Confederate Army, in Co. K, 43rd NC Regiment, CSA, in which several of Harriet's brothers also served.

Harriet and James had at least seven children: Daniel G. Dees (1858-bef.1870), Louisa Carolina Dees (1860-c.1892, Mrs. Julius Whitfield Taylor), Mary Ann Dees (1862-1947, Mrs. John Massey Taylor), William Thomas "Tommie" Dees (1865-1923), America Lutitia "Lula" Dees (1868-1892, m. Will Preslar) and Rufus Dalton Dees (1873-aft. 1918, m. Mary Elizabeth Myers).

Harriet and James were living in Fulton, Davie County in 1870. They may have subsequently lived in Iredell of Gaston County, and there are varying stories about Harriet's death and burial (and/or reburial.) One story I heard was that "She died in Iredell County, and her brother, Jeremiah W. Beachum (1830-1910), went up there and brought her body home for burial." Subsequently, I've heard from a direct descendant of hers who stated she died in Gaston Co., and was buried there, but when the family was moving back to Anson, they couldn't bear to leave her, so she was exhumed and brought home. I tend to think the second story is more likely, as it is said to have been told by one of her daughters; however, I believe her brother probably helped to bring her home, as well.
