MARY AUSTIN SERVICES HELD SUNDAY

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock last Sunday afternoon, March 8, 1964, in the First Lutheran Church of Varna, for Mrs. Mary Austin of 400 Walnut Street in the village, who had passed away at her home early Thursday morning March 5, 1965.
She had been in poor health for a number of years, and had been hospitalized several times. She had but recently passed her 90th birthday, nd had been one of the community's oldest residents.
Officiating at the services, which began with a brief service of Scripture and prayer at the Austin home and concluded with interment rites in the church parish cemetery, was the Rev. Glenn L. Anderson, pastor of the church.
Music for the church service consisted of organ prelude and postlude, played by the church organist, Miss Florence Gustafson; and two vocal selections, "Tryggare kan ingen vara" (in Swedish), and "Beyond the Sunset," sung by Miss Blanche Lindgren of Wenona, and accompanied by Miss Gustafson.
Pallbearers were Marion, Clark, and John Austin, Richard Benson, and Mark Mayeau, all grandsons, and Donald Lundgren, a nephew. Ushers for the church service were Floyd Palm and Daniel Nelson.
Prior to the services, friends called in very large numbers at the Austin residence in Varna, Saturday afternoon and evening, and at the church from 12:30 until the hour of the service. Assisting with handling the large number of floral tributes were Clark and Marion Austin, Richard Benson and Mark Mayeau, and Miss Bonnie Austin, all granddaughters. In addition, a sizeable number of cash memorials was given in her memory.
Mrs. Austin, whose maiden name was Anna Mary (Maria) Lundgren, was the eldest daughter and second of nine children of the late Sven Johann and Johanna Sophia (Lindgren) Lundgren, and was born at their farm home west of Varna on December 24, 1873. She spent her entire life in the Varna community.
Her marriage to the late Nels John Austin took place on May 15, 1895 in the area then known as the Oxbow, in the southern end of Magnolia township. The couple farmed in Roberts and Hopewell townships until 1927, moving to the village in that year. Mr. Austin passed away on July 8, 1954.
She is survived by all of the seven children who were born to them, Clarence, with whom she made her home for a number of years past in Varna; Ruth (Mrs. Edward) Benson and Floyd also of Varna, Melvin, presently of Covina, CA; Florence (Mrs. Emory) Munson of Blue Island, IL; and Carl and Maynard, also of Varna, eleven grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren, and one sister Miss Nina Lundgren, the youngest and last survivor of the Sven Lundgren family.
Preceding her in death were her parents, all of her brothers and sisters except Miss Nina, Charles, Emil, baby Fred, Gottfred, Hilma (Mrs. Carl Johnson), an unnamed infant, and Frida, her husband nearly 10 years ago; and two infant grandchildren.
She was confirmed at an early age in THE the Lutheran faith, and had been as long as her health permitted, a most loyal, interested, and active member of the church from which she was laid to rest Sunday.
The Boose Funeral Home of Henry was in charge of all arrangements.
