SERVICES SUNDAY AT VARNA FOR EMIL LUNDGREN, 77
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the First Lutheran church of Varna, for Emil Lundgren, 77, of the community, who passed away peacfully at his home on North Chestnut street, Thursday evening, February 12, 1953, about 10 o'clock after an illness of several months.
Rev. Orville K. Boose, pastor of the church officiated at the services, which included a brief private service at the home at 1:45 preceding the public service at 2 o'clock in the church, and concluded with interment in the parish cemetery (First Lutheran Church #1) north of the village.
Pallbearers were Clinton Lundgren, Floyd Austin, Donald Lundgren, and Maynard Austin, all of Varna, and Floyd Johnson of Chicago.
Boose funeral home of Henry was in charge of arrangements.
NATIVE OF OXBOW
Mr. Lundgren, the second son and third eldest of a family of nine children of Sven J. and Johanna Sophia (Lindgren) Lundgren, was born on his parents' farm in Magnolia township, in the community near Caledonia formerly known as the O
"Oxbow" on January 19, 1876. He celebrated his 77th birthday 23 days prior to his passing.
In 1900, upon his father's retirement from active farming, the family removed to Varna, where its home has been ever since. It was here that his marriage to the former Marie Louise Berggren, also of Varna community, occurred, on January 19, 1904, which happened to have been his own 28th birthday anniversary. To their union, was born only one child, a daughter, Ellen, now Mrs. Grant Flesburg. Mrs. Lundgren passed away on August 3, 1928, and since that time, Mr. Lundgren made his home with his aged mother, Mrs. Johanna Lundgren, who passed away in 1937, and his youngest sister, Miss Nina Lundgren. During a last illness which extended six months to the day, the latter, a registered nurse, tenderly and efficiently cared for him until his passing Thursday evening.
During his early years, he engaged in farming, but after his wife's death and his own removal back to the village, engaged in whatever work presented itself to be done, and for several years, was employed in the electrical goods shop of the late Ralph J. Gustafson in Varna. He was always known as a man extremely handy with tools, of whatever kind, and was always a cheerful and efficient workman at almost any task, particularly anything to do with repairing.
MEMBER OF LARGE FAMILY
Mr. Lundgren was one of the last three of a once large family, the other two survivors of it being Mrs. Mary (N.J.) Austin, and Miss Nina, the youngest, of the original nine children. Others preceding him in death, in addition to both parents, were his brothers, Charles and Fred Gotfred, and two sisters, Mrs. Hilma (Carl E.) Johnson and Miss Frida Lundgred, and two others of the family in infancy.
In addition to his daughter, Mrs. Grant Flesburg, survivors also include two granddaughters, Mrs. Mary Jane (Mervin) Grosenbeck of Peru, and Miss Virginia Flesburg, of Varna, and three great grandchildren; also a large number of nieces and nephews and other relatives, most of whom were present for the services Sunday. Several were from outside the Varna community.
