Tennessee's first State Deputy Supreme Knight, Ferdinand Emery
Kuhn was known as the "Father of Knights of Columbus in the South."
Born September 3, 1861 in Nashville, he was the son of Ferdinand &
Barbara (Müller) Kuhn – both German immigrants. Ferdinand, known as
F.E. was the youngest of eight children and attended Hume High School
in Nashville before attending the University of Notre Dame (Class of
1883) where during postgraduate work he presented the medal to the best undergraduate science student on campus.

He married Kate Wall on April 15, 1885. Kuhn joined the Knights of Columbus at Louisville, Kentucky on July 1, 1899. Returning to Nashville, he was appointed
Territorial Deputy by Supreme Knight Edward L. Hearn and immediately
began working to form a Tennessee State Council, which would be
establish on January 8, 1903. He would serve as the first State Deputy
from 1902-1908. Kuhn founded Council 544 (Nashville), 610
(Chattanooga), 616 (Memphis) and 645 (Knoxville). He also worked to
establish State Councils in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, and
Mississippi. Kuhn also served as Grand Knight of Council 544.
F.E. Kuhn died in Nashville on March 17, 1930. His State Deputy
Sword has been passed from State Deputy to State Deputy since 1908
and is used to dub new Third-Degree Knights.
