Johanna Caroline Edman was born in Provo, Utah to Hans and Anna Caroline Sandel Edman, the third child of 5 children (3 daughters & 2 sons). Her siblings were: John Niclas Edman, Anna Marie Edman, Devina Josephine Edman and Ephriam Edman. Her parents came from Fide, Soking, Gotland, Sweden, migrated to Utah and crossed the plains with ox teams in the company of Paterson and John Smith, the summer of 1864. The family located in Provo, where they lived in a dugout for some time and later moved to Salem, Utah. Johanna worked long hours in the fields gleaning wheat and also salvaging wool from the fence lines & fields, cording the wool into batts for making quilts, etc. She also worked in homes where she did housework and by 13 years of age she had the entire care of a mother and baby, including washing and cooking for the family. That was how she and Marcellus met,and they fell in love while she was working for his parents. They were married in Manti Temple, 12 March 1890.
They made Provo their home until 1915 when they moved to Teton, Idaho. To this union came ten children, 4 boys and 6 girls, all born in Provo: Clarence Marcellus, Vera Anna, Devena Fern, Ray Edman, Leah Harriet, Lloyd James, Melva Edna, Ruth Hannah, and John Alden. Every one of Johanna's children remarked about the good cook she was. When the children would come home from school there would be fresh bread. Johanna's grandchildren remember her good bread, cookies and family meals at the family get togethers after they had moved to Idaho.
Johanna died about four years after her husband on the 28 March 1952 at the age of 85 and was buried beside him. She had developed cancer which had spread to her liver.
