Catherine Carey was born on Christmas Day 1849 (birthdate is wrong on tombstone) in Pittsburgh, PA, the oldest daughter of James and Mary Colgan Carey. She was named after her maternal
Grandmother Catherine Fagan, who may have also been born on Christmas (if you go by Grandma's age given on her death record.)
Within months of her birth, her parents, older brother, maternal grandparents, aunts, and uncles (and lots of other Irish folks) moved the family to Minerton, Wilkesville Township, Vinton County, Ohio.

According to the 1870 census, Catherine was living in the home of her Grandmother Catherine Meehan Colgan Fagan and her uncle Nicholas C. Fagan, helping take care of grandma. According to the 1880 census, Catherine was still living in this household taking care of her 82 year-old grandma.
The next year 1881 her beloved grandmother died. It was not to be a good year for the family. 3 months later Catherine's father James Carey also died. By 1885 Catherine shows up in Sumner County, Kansas with her Uncle Nicholas Fagan (her mother's younger half brother). Nicholas must have decided to try his luck out west and Catherine, being in her mid 30s and unmarried was evidently ready for the adventure. In 1888 the Carey farm back in Minerton, Ohio was sold. Catherine's signature on the deed shows that she is still in Sumner. How long Catherine stayed in Kansas is not clear.

Catherine's whereabouts seems to fade after this....until a family letter came to light over 100 years later. This letter mentions a "Cass" Brady. Could this be her? Sure enough it was. We find Catherine back in Ohio and this time she is married. John Brady is his name. According to the 1900 census they had been married 5 years and lived at 167 Summit Alley, Columbus, Ohio in what is now the popular "Short North" part of town. From at least 1915 to 1924 they were living at 684 Kerr Avenue, also in the "Short North". It was here that they still lived at the time of John's death in 1924. Catherine survived him 3 years. At the time of Catherine's death she may have been living in the home of her cousin....and undertaker, J.J. Simons on Parson Avenue.

No children and Catherine and John have not been identified in any photos.

Gravesite Details

Date of burial - Mar. 26, 1927. Birth year is evidently wrong on stone. Should be 1849 according to death certificate. She had twin siblings born in 1852, so impossible for her to be born then also. Again, she appears to be younger than reality.
