James Carey was born in County Donegal, Ireland. At the age of 17 he went to England for 2 years then to Australia. He came to the U.S. and for a time settled in Pittsburgh. He was a "riverman" from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. By 1850 he brought his family to Minerton, Vinton County, Ohio where he took up farming for the next 30 years.
