Mary C. Carey was born in Minerton, Ohio on the farm of her parents. She attended St Mary's Catholic Church closeby. After the death of her father, the farm was sold and with some of her siblings and her mother, moved to Columbus.

Mary married Joseph Richard Goodall in 1891. In 1900 they were living on Bell Street. Mary's brother John Carey who worked on the Rail Road also lived with them.

Mary and Joseph lived for a time in Dayton, according to correspondence with the family. They also moved to the Bronx, NY before ending up in Detroit, Michigan.

Mary suffered from Tuberculosis. Mary's sister Annie Carey must have come to take care of her until Mary's death in 1919. Annie must have stayed on for a time after Mary's death. Mary's husband hit hard times especially during the Depression and his final moments were spent in Eloise Infirmary where he is buried in what can be described as a pauper's grave.
