Mary E. Colgan Carey was born in Hagerstown, Maryland very soon after the family arrived in the United States from Ireland. Her gravestone says that she was born in 1811 but this doesn't seem likely. Census records show a range of ages and seems more likely that she was born about 1822. Her older brother John Colgan was born in Ireland in 1820 and Mary was definitely born in Maryland after that. Her name is clearly given as Colgan in the death certificate of her daughter Catherine Carey Brady. A big quandary is her parentage. Her mother was surely Catherine (Meehan?)Colgan Fagan and I suspect that Patrick Fagan was her step-father whom I suspect Catherine married about 1825. Catherine Fagan likely was married previously to a man by the name Colgan, father of John and Mary. Mary Colgan must have married James Carey about 1848 most likely in Braddock, Allegheny County, PA. James and Mary came to Minerton, Ohio around 1850. After James died in 1881, she joined some of her children in Columbus, Ohio. In 1885 she was working at the United States Hotel. She died in Columbus but was brought back to be buried next to James and 4 of their children in Minerton.
