Albert and Henry Hulsebus of this City Among the Relatives of this Defiance Man
Mr Peter Hulsebus died at this home in Defiance on April 11, 1929, following a short illness with stomach trouble and complications at the age of 84. Funeral services were held at the Evangelical Church Sunday afternoon, with Rev FP Pfaltzgraff officiating. Internment was made in the Defiance cemetery.
Mr Peter Hulsebus was born in Steinfeld, Germany on March 2 1845. In 1873, he was united in marriage to Helena Weber, and in July of the same year they came to the United States. They first settled in Decatur, Illinois where they lived for 11 years. From there they moved to Shelby county, Iowa in 1884, where they settled on a farm 5 miles south of Defiance. To this union were born 11 children, 3 passing away in infancy.
In the year 1879, he became a member of the Evangelical church. Since that day he has had a keen interest in the work of the church, holding various positions of trust up to a year ago. He retired with his life's companion from the farm to his present home 17 years ago.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and 8 children: (1) Hanna Muller (Peter) of Harlan, (2) Tillie Ahrenholtz (Peter) of Defiance, (3) Kate Hartman (John) of Oelrich, SD), (4) Pete Jr Hulsebus (Floy Maxwell) of Defiance, (5) Lydia Ahrenholtz (Art) of Defiance, (6) Alfred Hulsebus (Sarah Harness) of Earling, (7) Rudolph Hulsebus (Ella Young) of Defiance, (8) Amanda Nelson (Nels) of California. Also surviving are 46 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren.
Additional survivors include 4 brothers; (1) Jake Hulsebus of Defiance, (2) Albert Hulsebus of Denison, (3) Henry Hulsebus of Denison and (4) August Hulsebus of Defiance, and 4 sisters; (1) Mrs Tillie Muller of Harlan, (2) Mrs Ella Lohse of Welcome, MN, (3) Mrs Ricka Faller (Lisbon, ND) and (4) Mrs Effie Nollen of Defiance.
In addition to his parents, Peter had 10 siblings and step-siblings that preceded him in death.
"Uncle Pete" as the deceased was known by his many friends will not only be missed by his immediate family, who knew him as a kind-hearted and loving husband and father, but by a host of friends who knew him to be a kind-hearted and good neighbor.
